MPS offers several bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) and
Immersion programs all aimed at preparing students for today's global
economy while encouraging cultural pride and tolerance.
ESL- English as a Second Language
children are given help in learning the content areas in English,
however help may or may not be given in their first language. The ESL
classroom differs from a bilingual classroom in several ways. There is
a lesser emphasis on first language preservation and the classroom may
be made up of children speaking several different languages.

Programs are designed to preserve and develop the first
language while ensuring full proficiency in English. Children are
taught all subject areas in both English and their first language. ESL
is a component of bilingual programs.

Story
Two-way Bilingual Program (also
referred to as dual language) serves both language minority students
and language majority students in the same classrooms. Generally, 50%
of the students come from each language group. Both languages are used
in teaching all subject areas.

Immersion Programs are
designed to provide English- speaking students with the opportunity to
learn a second language. All subject areas are taught in the second
language and instruction in English Reading is taught beginning in the
second grade. Immersion schools are all citywide specialty schools with
no seats reserved for walk-zone pupils. All immersion elementary
schools feed into Milwaukee School of Languages where immersion
instruction is continued through middle and high school.

NEW! – Learn Mandarin Chinese at Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language
(MACL)
Building on MPS's language immersion initiative, Mandarin Chinese is
being taught daily at the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language. The
focus will be basic Mandarin Chinese language acquisition as well as an
introduction to the southeast Asian culture. Call the school for more
