    Kindergarten through grade 8 Enrollment

We encourage all residents of the City of Milwaukee to enroll their children in a Milwaukee Public School. Whatever your child's specific educational needs may be, there is an MPS school that can meet them.

    When beginning the enrollment process:

Be sure to know the different Types of Schools MPS offers.

Visit our Choosing a School section to learn more about academic programs and other factors to consider.

There are several things you will need the first time you register your child with MPS. These include:

#1 The student's certified birth certificate

    #2 The student's immunization records

#3 Proof of address (current utility bill)

#4 Proof of identification of the parent (driver's license)

If the student is returning to MPS, only proof of address is needed.

To enroll your child in an MPS elementary or middle school, the three choice form is used.

The enrollment form allows you to select three schools. Your first choice should be the one that you think would be the best school for your child. The second and third choices should be schools that you would like your child to attend if your first choice is not available.

MPS encourages parents to choose the school that serves their neighborhood. If you choose a Neighborhood School, or Neighborhood Specialty School, you have a good chance of getting your first choice. The number of seats available and the number of students applying affect whether or not you get your first choice.

Because many parents choose Citywide Specialty Schools, your chance of getting assigned one is not as good as if you choose your Neighborhood School.

You have the right to choose any school in the district but will not be provided transportation in all cases. Be sure to read the transportation section before making your selections.

Some middle and high schools have an application process. This process takes place at the end of October and the requirements vary from school to school.
